As a species we don’t put much pressure on ourselves. One need look no further than the nearest litter-strewn abandoned lot to realize we collectively hold ourselves accountable for very little. Don’t even get me started on the plastic in our oceans, the contaminated water, the polluted air, the endangered species…
As individual organisms we are absolutely bound by our innate shackles, with fear being a key motivator. What causes fear varies from individual to individual, but we all fear being left behind. A quick Google search of “herd behavior” gives many hits of the two-legged variety. Ethology is very interesting, but that is a story for another day.
The transition from one calendar year to another is significant, nobody wants to be left in the past. Out of date, out of touch, yesterday’s news. An easy solution is the New Year’s Resolution and all its iterations. The one I have noticed the most on Twitter is #oneword. This is deceptively simple, because while adhering to one word might be easy, choosing that one word is exceedingly difficult.
Integrity was my first choice, but as I recently turned 40 and I am not feeling as healthy as I once did, I wanted to choose health too. I’d hardly call this greedy. I asked on Twitter if I could have two words. Someone quickly replied that there was a precedent for three words, reminding me of the axiom, “There’s something for everything.” I started thinking about the Next Generation Science Standards, as a science teacher is wont to do, and I decided I should align my #2016inthreewords to the 3D nature of the NGSS. Sorry, not sorry! (Note: I am Canadian, so I’m probably still a little sorry.)
The NGSS 3D set-up involves 1) practices, 2) cross cutting concepts, and 3) disciplinary core ideas. An NGSS expert can correct me if I’m wrong, but I loosely interpret these as 1) the act of doing, 2) really big ideas, and 3) the stuff formerly known as content. As such, I have chosen my three words, a) DO, b) BE, and c) ME. Do be me. After all, I’m the only person who can. (Note: For any #oneword adherents, this loosely translates to authentic.)
